Skills for Tech Jobs
supported by:
Skills for Tech Jobs is a career guidance project for middle and high school students. It was developed as part of the Junior Achievement Success Skills international program and includes two educational modules especially designed for hybrid lessons – Jobs in Tech and Learn Programming –, consultancy and mentoring activities organized with the support of Honeywell volunteers, and online or face-to-face job shadowing sessions for different professions in the company’s field of activity.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
Through learning, consultancy and practical experience activities, the project supports teachers in their educational quest to provide young people with in-depth information about the technical and professional skills required to succeed in the world of technology.
During the project, Honeywell volunteers provide expertise in 4 main areas of activity: Aerospace; Control technologies for buildings and industrial spaces; Materials and performance technologies; Solutions to ensure workers' productivity and safety.
PROJECT STRUCTURE
- The Jobs in Tech educational module, developed to complement the Success Skills program: students, coordinated by teachers or volunteers, take part in lessons/activities designed to offer the personal and communication skills needed for career development and professional success.
- The Learn Programming educational module: students, guided by teachers or volunteers, discover some of the most used programming languages and their applicability, as well as a range of new IT&C careers and jobs.
- Mentoring or consultancy activities run with the support of Honeywell volunteers: webinars, Q&A sessions, special trainings for teachers.
- Face-to-face and online sessions for job shadowing activities with students, covering various careers in Honeywell's area of expertise.
EDUCATIONAL CONTENT
- Students and teachers have free access to JA's Success Skills education kit and the Jobs in Tech and Learn Programming modules.
- Together with Honeywell volunteers, students have the opportunity to explore different career options and the required professional skills by attending webinars and Q&A sessions, engaging in role-plays or by observing case studies and the practical examples provided by experts.
- Virtual job shadowing activities offer the opportunity to observe the day-to-day details, specific responsibilities and tasks of real jobs, as well as aspects related to organizational culture.
“I really enjoyed both the topic and the presentation held by the Honeywell volunteer, because I learned new terms and I was able to understand things that were not clear to me before. I believe that this activity, carried out within the Skills for Tech Jobs project, helps my personal development and I want to take part in as many such sessions as possible.“ – Student, Virgil Madgearu Economic College, Bucharest
“The online session, which I attended with my students, was interesting and useful because the information provided can be used in practice. It’s important to teach our students how to manage in life, to evaluate their experiences, to properly prepare a presentation or resumé, and to put themselves in value. Through this activity, I understood the «secrets» of successful presentations and CVs. I also enjoyed how the presentation was structured, and in the future I would like to attend even more sessions on current and future jobs.“ – Teacher, School No. 7, Galati
